The river Manzanares’ passage through Madrid has been the object of one of the most important processes of urban renovation in Europe. The city had ignored the riverbank areas, until the early twenty-first century saw the underground tunnelling of one of the city’s main roads, and Madrid-Río was built. This has brought about a series of transformations in the whole area, generating significant urban renovation.

The challenge in this project consisted in designing an 80-square-meter inexpensive space inside a 1950s building, for a young couple.

To achieve this, ceilings, walls and pavements have been selectively dismantled, preserving the original concrete structure. From a nearby waste bin, hydraulic tiles that are older than a century were recovered and used for the pavement.

The rest of the floor was made with natural oak recycled wood. The main space was recycled to create a sequence of areas connected through concrete porticos. Also, new elements of multifunctional furniture have been incorporated for the kitchen and dormitories. carpentry, a structure of small solid wood beams and small ceramic domes have taken center stage.
