This renovation project took place inside one of the residential towers within the boundaries of the AZCA complex in Madrid. The 19-hectare area sees 120,000 pedestrians pass by on a daily basis. Only some 4,300 actually live there; the rest are the customers or employees of the 500 companies and 180 shops that make up the area. AZCA was initially designed as a microcity inside Madrid.

This complex was originally designed with separate areas, including three underground levels for vehicle circulation and parking spaces, and two surface levels for pedestrian areas. However, such segregation resulted in an insecure night environment.

Its mix of uses and means of transport have, on the other hand, proven to be more sustainable and pleasant to citizens.

For this reason we have approached the rehabilitation of this 60-square-meter apartment to improve sustainability and urban life. The design maximized flexibility and luminosity, integrating common and private spaces.

The pallete of materials included wood, a grayish green and concrete raw material, creating a natural atmosphere with contrasts of character and tone. The private area was lit with fluted glass without compromising privacy. The renovation included energetic efficiency improvements, low-consumption climatizing and insulation.
